We can all gain from coaches.
We can all gain from coaches.
It may be too soon for a specific coach
at this time for you.
First speak more, and more and more.
Church groups, women's groups, youth groups, scout groups, sororities, etc.
Focus on coming up with 3 speeches
that you truly want to give and begin
giving them wherever and whenever you can.
I started in 1980 giving presentations on
Leading Tools, Styles and Traits
Communication Tools, Styles and Traits
Team Tools, Styles and Traits
Creative Thinking Tools & Techniques, Styles and Traits
During the first year or two while I was still a professor in the Art Department and an adjunct for the School of Environmental Design I spoke for Rotaries, Lions, Kiwanis, Civilian
Institute for Government programs as a concurrent or guest speaker. That led to my working with several other UGA institutes, the Georgia Center and many individual colleges and departments for meetings of theirs
Then the late Walt de Nero asked me to give talks about
Leading and Leading Styles for Community and County Leadership Development Programs for Rome, Georgia, one weekend and the Cartersville, Georgia.
Those two led me to give 350 to 400 of those until 2010 or before.
I have been corresponding today with one of the original Chamber of Commerce Executive Directors that Walt connected me with, John Cox, who was then part-time/volunteer Executive Director for the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce. He eventually became full-time. I did his Leadership Paulding Development Kickoff Retreat for 17 years in a row before he moved to the Carolinas. He is now the Ex Dir at the Naples, Florida Chamber. We have known each other since the early 80s.
I will gladly be a beginning coach.
Let's talk during our ride into Atlanta and back next week.
Here is my second generation website created by two men I met through
a creative thinking chat group on the original internet before the www
was created. One I have never met who lives in New York state. The other lives
in Sydney, Australia and we have met in person twice: 2001 and 2006 and
correspond by Facebook or email weekly and sometimes daily.
Most coaches I have met and those I have gotten to know through NSA
keep saying....
3 speeches
I always have 4 because I chose to focus on 4 inter-related and inter-dependent topics
Leading
Communicating
Teaming
Cre8ng
Here is a sample page from my 3rd generation website that shares samples of speeches for Cre8ng only.

When Earl Nightingale retired from the company he co-created in 1960, he and I started a new company; one that would take messages of empowerment to people of all ages, around the world.
I had worked with inner-city teens and The Mental Health Association before meeting and marrying Earl, and I realized that the one major factor in keeping people locked in their present situation was, lack of information. Information that offers, choice and change.
For too many years, self-help and personal development was offered only to already successful businessmen and written and provided by successful businessmen, with the largest segment of society just being stuck where they were.
My suggestion was to find a way to "unlock doors through education"TM by using, "keys" of accomplishment and information. So, in 1987, Keys Publishing was formed to take the Nightingale messages to the world. That was pretty ambitious since the use of personal computers and the internet were still foreign to us.

Jim Cathcart one of the world's finest speakers and coaches of speakers.
Jim was incoming president of the NSA in 1990 when I went to my first NSA Convention that was held in Atlanta. I began an NSA professional and personal friendship with him then that has lasted ever since. A few times when I have been in La Jolla near San Diego we have had lunch together.
He has in addition to this sales trainer PROCAST program an excellent how to become a PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER program.
Watch some of his videos.
He also has done an excellent TED Talk.
TED Talk
Use TED, TEDX, TM, NSA talks and speeches are teaching tools
Use TED, TEDX, TM, NSA
talks and speeches are teaching tools
Learn from every speaker you listen to.
great, good, okay, bad, terrible
Perhaps watch one TED or TEDx talk each day Monday to Friday
and take notes about the visual, verbal, physical, emotional aspects
of each one
Or mix TED or TEDx talks with TM talks or NSA speaker Videos.
Not ALL TED or TEDx talk speakers are strong speakers.
What they have in common is their true commitments to their passions.
Learn from you own speaking.
One of the most powerful books in my life about communication
was written by Richard Saul Wurman, one of the 3 co-founders
of the TED Conferences that have led to the TED TALKS and
the TEDx conferences and TEDx talks over the approximately 40 years>
He too was an architect and a graphic designer before
he became passionate about communication.

There are MANY, MANY RESOURCES for helping people become better speakers.
There are MANY, MANY RESOURCES
for helping people become better speakers.
This blog contains some info I have tried to share with many young or beginning speakers since the early 1990s when I was the MENTOR coordinator for my TM 1779 Club in Athens and for the Georgia Speakers Association's Mentor Program (now NSA-Georgia Chapter).
Over the past 35 to 40 years the TED CONFERENCES have become a global phenomenon.
There are over 1,000 TED Talks or TEDx Talks on YouTube and other websites that can be watched and studied.
Many successful and moderately successful professional speakers have written books about SPEAKING.
The NSA - National Speakers Association website has many links to its members websites that include many from hundreds to over a 1,000 sample speech videos to study
Toastmasters, International also has links to many of its contest winners' speeches
plus their own individual websites.
The key for developing your own skills is to start a realistic, workable plan and schedule for your personal and professional development of
Speaking Skills
Platform Skills
Training Skills
Marketing Skills
Promotion Skills
Sales Skills
Client Development & Relationship Skills
Contact Skills
and much more
Here are two examples of the seemingly endless supply of resources to choose from
NSA Speakers such as
Jim Cathcart
Patricia Fripp
and
many others have books webinars, podcasts, traveling workshops and seminars or intensive BOOT CAMPS and NSA puts on workshops for specialized topics related to speaking and the running of a speaking business in addition to its annual Convention and Winter Workshop.
to use PROPS....it is your choice
I use a PROPS table for my props, handouts and other miscellaneous things I use rather than a lecture, pulpit or podium.
You will learn which will work for you
and with which type of audiences.
Use of Lecterns, Pulpits or Podiums as a Speaker
Use of Lecturns, Pulpits or Podiums as a Speaker
Lectern
oh well
Hopefully some of these thoughts will be useful to you.
lecterns, podiums pulpits are only tools
Lectern
oh well
Hopefully some of these thoughts will be useful to you.
lecterns, podiums pulpits are only tools
and generally tools of the past
people use their stage areas and have for many years.

Most speakers no longer use them
ministers do,
preachers do
some politicians do
some professors do
first thing that is taught in stand up comedy classes is
how to take control by taking the mic out of the stand
and moving the mike stand out of the away so you
can stand there and speech or do your routine.
Watch the debates between
Clinton and Bush
or Clinton and Dole.
You have some attachment for a lectern pulpit or podium.
Please do not let it hamper you. Use it when it makes sense and truly adds to your presentation.
Just speaking rarely works with today's audiences.
Showing them through gestures, position, body movements. location.
If it is a formal dinner or a church then the FRONT TABLE or the Pulpit
usually are required.
The members of 1779 are beginners
They have been only exposed to either
a. poor use of a lectern pulpit or podium
b. mostly bad use of not using them
Lynyetta is getting better with her use of movement for a purpose or reason.
You seem to equate the use of a lectern, podium or pulpit to IMPORTANT messages.
Lincoln use them, didn't use them
Socrates sat or laid on the ground when he taught.
Karen I didn't see you effectively using the lecturn yesterday. That is why I took the short video I tried to share with you last night.
You danced around it.
You didn't stand behind it.
For many years I used a table to lay my notes and/or props on. rather than a lectern, pulpit or podium.
Lecterns, pulpits, podiums HIDE hand and arm gestures, especially for short people,
which is one of the reasons many Toastmasters stopped using them.
I was speaking in a family room to a group of professional speakers sitting and standing around listening to me.
How would a lectern, pulpit or podium have helped me here?
how would a lectern, pulpit or podium have helped me here?
sample internet marketing effort using a BLOG
for several years my work has been the result of
IN-COMING MARKETING
because of emails, e-zines, newsletters, professional presentations at conferences,
word of mouth, my website, articles or books.
Most recently those types of clients or projects have dried up or STOPPED DEAD.
So I am expanding my efforts of
OUT-BOUND MARKETING
of using Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, website, direct emails
To include using one or more of my BLOGS to attract readers and potential clients.
Here is my first examples I am methodically sending out to groups of 30 to 50 people
that are in my Gmail directory of emails.
I have tried Constant Contact and Monkey (something) in the past
but because I was adding people to my growing lists instead
of them SIGNING ON of their free will I was BLACKBALLED by Constant Contact.
Since then I have decided not to PAY monthly fees for things I can do on my own.
Wishful, naive thinking perhaps but the approach I have chosen>
Start with people I know or have known before reaching blindly to strangers.

EMAIL marketing process
Karen
Here is the most elaborate email promotional campaign process I have seen since the first email message I read in the early 1980s.
Nishant is a professional speaker friend in Singapore
who speaks to huge audiences, does public workshops
and does programs inside companies as well as individual coaching.
He has gone from being a foreigner who moved from India to Singapore
to the level of a very successful speaker in Singapore in less than 10 years.
I usually have a meal or coffee with him each time I go to Singapore
plus I see him at APSS - Asian Professional Speakers-Singapore meetings
that I attend or have presented at.
My first question to him is going to be
who set up the system for him
who is he contracting with to set it up or manage it for him
how much did it cost or what is the monthly fee.
Because I have chosen to live frugally and be creative
I do not pay large amounts of money or agree to monthly fee contracts.
I am not looking for 100 to 150 speaking engagements a year any more
and haven't since 1998.
I have lived more as an altruist or advocate since 1998 than as
a professional speaker running a successful business.
The key to marketing is
CONSISTENT CONTINUAL ONGOING COMMUNICATION
The Southern Salesperson or what has been called the Relationship Salesperson
is the model I have worked best for me....
They meet people.
They get to know them as friends.
They help them using their skills and knowledge when their friends need help.
They do not work with strangers.
It is idealistic, generally, yet it takes a lot of stress out of life for me.
